Here is a little more to see as I'm upgrading my items and brewing some potions.
Upgrading is pretty straight forward: to get materials you just dismantle any and all items you don't need and with these you can upgrade the weapons, armors etc. that you want to use.
Of course, you won't have a lot of items left to sell (rings and amulets), but money is no issue in TW2.
Alchemy seems more complicated but you just use 2 - or if you upgrade alchemy, more - ingredients and hit the brew button.
The only thing one needs alchemy is because you get skill points for brewing potions :D
