Tyrian is a vertical shooter with a lot of options for customising your spaceship. You can buy powerups rather than picking up whatever is floating around in space. You can even buy new types of ships.

This was recommended to me by GameplayJenny after I asked for some great shooters to do research on for my own game I'm developing. It's a very well made shooter and lots of fun. I look forward to playing this some more.
