So, Grendizer huh?
What's the hubbub, bub?
Well, it's began as the less popular of the giant robot anime Go Nagai produced in Japan around that time, following Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger. It shifted the focus from Earth based protagonists to a Prince from outer space, making Koji Kabuto, the pilot of Mazinger Z, a second fiddle in the new series. The eventual release of Goldorak in France, Goldrake in Italy and Adventures In Space: UFO - Grendizer in Lebanon to great success was what made Grendizer a worldwide phenomenon.
In the US, with the popularity of the Mattel "Shogun Warriors" line of giant robot (of which Grendizer was part of), producer Jim Terry purchased the right to five giant robot anime from Toei Animation which were aired in parts of California and Ontario during the 80-81 TV season under the anthology title "Force Five".
The bad: Only the first 26 episodes of "Grandizer" have been aired and, if the episode numbering is correct, it apparently ended on a cliffhanger... The Good: The game resets the Grendizer universe for a new crowd using the original Japanese names for the characters, delinking from sub-par translated material. A shame variants of the French names based upon stars weren't used, but I can't complain as the mission names are making use of the French translated episode titles.
What you are about to watch is very much based upon the original work, down to a T. The look and feel of every single piece of drawing, costuming, ships, voice and music is there and appropriate, turning even the eldest of then fanboys into a giggling little pup. If you've been a fan in any way shape or form, methinks you might be hooked for the duration. You tell me about it.
