Better tip:
Buy at least 10 ladder up and ladder down spells and just simply go to the floor you want right at the beginning.

There are two types of towns, if one town doesn't carry ladder up or ladder down, the other one will.

The reason for ladder up becomes obvious, because otherwise you won't be making a quick escape like I did here with only 15 food left, making it to town with only 4.

If you think food is a problem in Ultima I, wait till you get to Ultima 7 and they nag you about it.
