Will this be it? Can the Avatar and his companions finally reach the mainland without the game throwing more hurdles in front of us? Yes and no: the game does have one last quest for us to complete on the way back to the Serpent Isle, but we do overcome it and it *is the last one*!
After returning from the Mountains of Freedom, the Avatar regroups with his companions and they make their way into the catacombs beneath Moonshade. Mosh's promises of friendship with the Ratmen don't come even a little bit true, but they don't slow us down for long. Before you know it, we've discovered Furnace, the lost city of Gargoyles!
Zhelkas, the Gargoyle King, is the only citizen left to greet us, as the rest of the gargoyle population has fallen into an eternal slumber, dreaming the same dream of the arrival of a hero from another world, pure of heart and sure of sword. Sayyyy... we know a guy like that!
Indeed, it seems likely that the Avatar is just the hero the gargoyles dream of, but coincidence alone isn't enough to persuade Zhelkas. First, the Avatar must pass the Test of Purity, demonstrating his willingness to not flee his responsibilities or commit horrible sex crimes.
With my purity demonstrated, we're off through the last batch of tunnels, where we fight a bunch of trolls using the classic strategy of "press C and wait a second for the victory music to play." At long last, the Avatar and his companions emerge from a cave mouth near Monitor: we're back, baby!
Next time: we see if, indeed, Fawn has its own little subquest just like Monitor and Moonshade did!
