In this video, we unbox the Hyperkin Space Black Edition of the RetroN 2 HD

In early 2019, Hyperkin announced an update to one of their legacy clone systems. The Retron 2 combined a clone NES and Super NES system into one, however, the video output was limited to composite output. The update to the system would re-engineer the case, and also include an all-important HDMI output. The result is the system you see here, the Space Black Edition RetroN 2 HD.

There are actually two different versions of this system, a traditional gray version, which was released towards the end of summer 2019, and this space Black Edition which was released in early fall 2019. Both systems are identical, except for the shells that the system and the controllers are housed in.

Like all Hyperkin systems, the RetroN 2 HD includes everything you need to get connected and playing, minus games. Both composite video and HDMI cables are included, a micro USB cable, a power supply, and both a Cadet and Scout controller. There are no games installed on the system as it uses traditional NES, Super NES, and Super Famicom cartridges, sold separately.

The Scout and Cadet controllers included are very good, they have been available separately for quite some time. One of the nice things about both controllers is the fact that they include a 10ft long cable, meaning that you can stretch out and relax and not have to be huddled around the system. Only one of each controller is included for each system, however, the RetroN 2 HD is compatible with Super NES, Super Famicom, and NES style controllers.

This is considered to be a SOC, system-on-a-chip. That being said, it uses hardware to emulate the performance of the NES and Super NES, not software emulation. This is the exact same setup as their RetroN HD and Supa RetroN HD.

The RetroN 2 HD is compatible with NTSC and PAL games. There are two switches underneath the system, one for each platform, to adjust the region. One of my switches was actually in PAL mode when I unboxed it, so you may want to give yours a quick once-over before you go to play.

The overall fit and finish of the system is quite good, including the connectors. The Super NES and Super Famicom style connector is a snug fit, but not what I would classify as a death-grip. The NES connector, I felt that was much tighter. However, once I inserted a cartridge a few times it seemed to free up and felt pretty similar to the Super NES side effects

Make sure you subscribe to the channel as we will be posting our full-blown review following this unboxing. We will be testing both NTSC and PAL games on the system for both the NES and Super NES.
