Before Dark Souls, From Software first attempt at a horror themed RPG was critically panned by critics. Does it completely suck or is it maybe worth checking out? Does it deserve to be in the top 5 worst games of 1999 along with Superman 64?
On a trip to visit your grandmother, you are shocked to discover that her entire village has been laid to waste. Darkness has taken over the land a once great castle is now a mere hole in the ground. A surviving villager sends you on a quest to put an end to this evil once and for all. Will you begin your descent into the tower or is it into hell?
If you're a fan of From Software's Souls Series, you owe yourself to at least give Shadow Tower a try since there are more than a few similarities to be found. Remember Quelaag that hot spider monster from Dark Souls? Hmm this monster looks very familiar! I wonder where they got the name Dark Souls from? Oh check out this sweet ring I found. Remember Patches, the NPC you thought you could trust? Wonder where they got that idea? There are plenty of backstabbing ones here! Don't believe me? Check this out!
Move over casuals! It's time to git gud? Think you know everything just cause you beat King's Field before? Think again! This game ups the challenge and then some! Items now have durability and break. Want to repair an item? Sure a shopkeeper can do that for you... in exchange for a whole lotta your hit points. Did you love Blight Town in Dark Souls? Get ready to march and swim through levels filled with poison and acid. Don't want all your equipment to break? Leave your boots at home, because you'll be spending a lot of time barefoot John McClane style.
Now listen I can't personally vouch for this mode since you guys know I don't have any friends and all that, but this is one area of the game that critics really liked. Each player can load up their saved games and duke it out mortal combat style using monsters that have been unlocked in game. Spice up the combat with by betting items with your opponent or creating the ultimate monster team in 3 vs 3 mode. I ain't got a cool clip for the multiplayer but I did rescue a demoness trapped in the body of a human sized doll!

I hear ya! This is probably the biggest gripe holding a lot of new players back from checking out this game, but I have great news for you! There is a sweet new mod that gives the game full mouse look so you can play it with a mouse and keyboard now just like a modern first person game! It's a vast improvement over the controller and it's honestly super amazing! I'll leave a link in the video description below if you want to check it out! I've actually beaten this game with a controller before so I still recommend checking it out either way. With the mod on you can do some crazy circle strafing around enemies like this!
One of the biggest complaints critics had was there is absolutely no music in the game except for the intro and end credits scene. Zero, zilch, nada! So this might seem like a super bad thing, I know but they actually tried something different here. It kind of makes the game more realistic and scarier for real. From Software was totally going for a more horror vibe this time around and you can get totally creeped out in a few places in this game. This is one of those games where you definitely want to play at night and with the lights off. Listening to enemies also makes secret walls easier to find which is essential for making it through the late game areas.
While Dark Souls is known for giving a lot of lore away in it's item descriptions, it's the creature book here that might have been the start of that trend. Also has anybody actually read the description on the back of this game!?! Ultimately you are searching for the cause of all this mess - the king's crown that can grant it's wearer any wish. What will your wish be? Will you bring peace to the land or keep it in unending darkness? Sounds a bit familiar eh? Speaking of familiar, here is a NPC that might give you a bit of boulder Deja vu.
