Unexpected Uses of the Second Controller in EarthBound - Retrogaming Easter Eggs #shorts
3,304In EarthBound for the SNES, there are two (possibly more?) useless but unique functions of the second controller, and I learned about them from my YouTube friend named MegaHarv!
Near the very beginning of the game, where Ness meets Buzz Buzz at the meteor landing site, there's a scene in which Buzz Buzz (not a bee) introduces himself to your main character. As he approaches Ness, a pillar of light beams toward the sky. If you press the Select button on the second controller as Buzz Buzz is flying toward Ness, you will be able to truncate this pillar of light, which serves absolutely no purpose, but is cool and interesting.
Later on in the game, just after you make it to Summers, Tony will ask for your player name as you're leaving a house in the Toto region. While you're entering your name on this screen, if you press Select on the second player controller, you can make a small flag appear toward the bottom of the screen. These easter eggs have zero purpose, but I've been playing EarthBound since like 1995 and I never knew about these.
