September 10th, 1941: As German armies make progress north and south of Kiev, an enormous salient has developed. Half a million Russian troops are holding the line at Kiev and along the Dnieper River, and Stavka appears oblivious to the clear danger they could be surrounded there. OKH plans to do just that, with a bold two-pronged panzer strike. Although this requires diversion of troops from the drive on Moscow, the reward would be the destruction of an entire Soviet front.
