August 18th, 1941: By mid-August, Army Group South has reached the banks of the mighty lower Dnieper River. The Red Army, reeling from defeat at the Uman pocket, struggles to piece together a connected defence of the river line. In some places they offer ferocious resistance; in others , complete ineptitude. The Germans seek to take crossings on the hop, while reducing the last stubborn pockets of defenders on the river's west bank.
