July 18th, 1942: German High Command has accepted Gen. Manstein's plan to use the Eleventh Army to cross the Kerch Straits to the Kuban. With only a small flotilla of assault barges and captured fishing craft, the landing forces depend on the Luftwaffe to keep the superior Soviet Black Sea Fleet at bay. Once ashore, the Germans seek to take Novorossiysk and Krasnodar before the Red Army can organize a proper defence.

After staving off the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941/42, the German Wehrmacht reclaims the initiative the following summer. Concentrating their forces in the south, the Germans once again slice through Soviet lines, aiming for the oilfields of the Caucasus and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the Red Army has learned much from past failures and prepares to strike back in an overwhelming fashion.
