0January 13th, 1943: New Year's Day, 1943. For the Axis, the situation on the Eastern Front worsens by the hour. Buoyed by their recent string of victories, the Red Army launches yes another offensive into the increasingly rickety Axis front line. This time it is the turn of the Hungarians and Italians to bear the full brunt of a Soviet offensive. The Voronezh Front aims to destroy the Italian 8th and Hungarian 2nd Armies, after which follow-up operations will strike at Voronezh and beyond. At this stage the Germans have little left with which to support their hard-pressed allies.

After staving off the Soviet winter counteroffensive of 1941/42, the German Wehrmacht reclaims the initiative the following summer. Concentrating their forces in the south, the Germans once again slice through Soviet lines, aiming for the oilfields of the Caucasus and the industrial city of Stalingrad. But the Red Army has learned much from past failures and prepares to strike back in an overwhelming fashion.
