15Movie studios have constructed diverse sets on their backlots, adaptable for various uses and easily transformable to depict any era or ambiance. These sets range from natural landscapes like mountains and forests to man-made constructs such as ships, quaint global villages, bustling streets of the Old West, and contemporary city blocks reminiscent of New York City, Paris, Berlin, and London. They feature various architectural styles, from Victorian homes to suburban dwellings and 19th-century townhouses surrounding a central park with trees. Notable examples include the Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank, California, famous for the "Friends" title sequence, and Universal Studios, where the "Psycho" house stands.
European Streets:
The simple exteriors along Little Europe's streets can be readily modified and enhanced, allowing them to represent any global location. Elements such as street signs, lampposts, and various urban accessories can evoke different eras or locales for viewers.
Though the ground may mimic cobblestone, it's made of pressed cement. This provides a durable base temporarily concealed with sand or dirt to depict different historical periods.
Constructed in 1967, the present structures serve as reproductions of the original sets, rebuilt in response to a catastrophic fire that year that razed the entire area, including a section of Spartacus Square.
Court of Miracles:
This iconic section of the backlot, likely named after the setting in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) described as "a city of thieves; a hideous blot on the face of Paris," rather than "The Miracle Man" (1919), has hosted appearances by nearly all the legendary Universal horror characters. These include Dracula (portrayed by Bela Lugosi), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and the Hunchback of Notre Dame (Lon Chaney Sr.), with Frankenstein's Monster making his debut here in 1931, causing the townsfolk to scatter in fear.
