This video shows how to use All-Star Mode alone to quickly unlock characters.

Updates:

Since making this I've learned several things.

1. You can reset and still get challenger's approach

2. Beating your records doesn't help the unlock process, it seems to all come down to time played and the mysterious movement metric.

3. There's evidence that multiplayer, even playing online, helps. Play 10-20 matches online and after completing any gameplay mode characters seem to appear after each reset.
