Today I'm Unpacking Player Interpretation in videogames and what better way to do that than with the videogame, Unpacking.
Although Unpacking has a main character they are intentionally obscured from the player's view. In doing so the Unpacking player (i.e. you!) naturally fills in the space with their own experiences. This happens in lots of games, particularly FPSs where you see through the characters eyes. But Unpacking uses its items as clues, hiding hundreds of tiny hints within its brown boxes. Each of those tells us a little bit about Unpacking's main character but also tells us something of our self, for all of Unpacking's items have an uncanny ability to transport the player back in time.
