Unreal Tournament 3 - Revisiting 15 Years Later
To continue my series on reviewing Arena FPS games, I thought I was take it back to Arena FPS that killed all my hopes and dreams - UT3.
I was pretty excited for the release of Unreal Tournament 3. I'd become addicted to UT2004 and was playing the game l all day every day, trying to beat everyone and establish myself as the best, but meanwhile less and less people were even playing the game until it dwindled to a tiny player base. With the announcement of UT3, I thought maybe this game would take off, and I'd have all this UT skill that will translate over, and I'll finally be a pro! Sadly, that did not happen.
UT3 released in 2007 with a variety of issues that made it difficult to fall in love with. There were small things like some of the weapons being different, the movement had some changes from what I was used to, and every scene looked way overcomplicated with detail. But I don't think those were it's killer. In my opinion, it was the lack of a good netcode making even 50 ping feel terrible, and a horrible backend making anything from starting to a private game to hosting a tournament just awful.
With that being said, I still poured many hours into the game, striving to be the best in the west. UT2004 players and UT99 players came together for a few months, we had some tournaments, and then we realized this game is just as dead as our old games, so we went back to our old games. GG
Hope you like my 15 year later review! Did YouTube even exist when this thing released?
