If you weren't a PC gamer back in the day, or maybe you didn't have a PC that was powerful enough to run modern games at the time, chances are, you played the hand-me-down console ports of popular PC games. Most of us grew up as console gamers, PC gaming was incredibly expensive at the time, so most of us played games like Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and other ports like Half-Life for the first time through their console ports. I guess that's why I will always have a soft-spot for the Dreamcast port of Unreal Tournament. Yes, it's controller controls aren't great, and I never got to play this game online on the DC, but I've always enjoyed killing bots in both the single player and bot multiplayer modes in this game.

The heavy handed auto aim does make hitting your AI controlled opponents a lot easier, making the lack of a second analog stick on the DC controller a lot more manageable. None of the pre-set control schemes are perfect, but they work well enough. I've never owned a DC mouse, so I've never played this version with a keyboard and mouse.

When compared to the PS2 port, I like the DC version better. It had less framerate issues, and you can play with more bots in the DC version making for more hectic fun. I like the PS2 port, even with it's framerate issues, but on the PS2, being a launch game, it was going head-to-head against Timesplitters which ran so much faster and smoother with around a dozen bots on screen making the PS2 port of UT all the less impressive. I now own the PC version of UT, both physically on CD, and on Steam (I bought it before it was pulled down from Steam), and the PC version is, obviously, the best version, but I still enjoy coming back to the DC and PS2 versions of the game for some simple bot deathmatches. Unreal Tournament will always be fun, no matter the port.

NOTE: I am using the Dreamcast VGA Box with a VGA to HDMI adapter to record this footage.
