Unreal Tournament (PS2) Bot Deathmatch -No Commentary- | PS2 Launch Game |
Unreal Tournament was a launch game for the PS2, and out of the two console ports, for bot deathmatch, I actually prefer the Dreamcast version. It gives you more bots, and runs a little better. The PS2 version still plays well, and is still a fun version of the game, but as you can see, it has framerate issues. You also have to configure the controls in the options menu to get the modern right stick aim, and left stick move, but it is something you can do, because the defaults make it control like Goldeneye on the N64.
When it comes to controller play, the PS2 version definitely controls better than the Dreamcast version using just the controller. I found that the movement and aiming control settings I like on the DC force me to hit up on the D-pad to use the secondary fire, so using the lightning gun is out of the question. Both version support keyboard and mouse. The PS2 version supports a USB mouse, and it had Lan support via the firewire port on the front of early PS2 systems, while the DC version had full online play with twice as many players in the game than Quake III on the DC did (8 as opposed to 4), over 56K connections.
All the said, UT is fun in all it's versions. The PS2's technical issues aside, it's still fun. The big thing is, being a launch title put this game in direct competition with Timesplitters, and by comparison, Timesplitters moved and ran so much smoother than this game, even is TS only looks like a high-rez N64 game. The DC version had Quake III as it's competition, and for offline bot DM, I prefer UT on the DC over Q3 on the DC. Hoever, for the PS2, I prefer Q3 over UT, but I prefer Timesplitters to both.
