Plot Summary:
Prologue
The game begins with the disappearance of Hannah and Beth Washington, who flee into the snowy wilderness after being humiliated by a prank orchestrated by their friends. They fall off a cliff during a chase, seemingly dying.
One Year Later
The remaining group of friends – Sam, Josh (the twins' brother), Mike, Emily, Ashley, Chris, Matt, and Jessica – reunites at the Washington family's lodge, invited by Josh to commemorate the anniversary of the sisters' disappearance. As they settle in, strange and terrifying events begin to unfold, and it becomes clear that they are being stalked by a mysterious figure.
Unraveling Mysteries
The group is tormented by both supernatural and human threats. Tensions rise as members of the group become separated, face life-or-death decisions, and uncover disturbing clues about the lodge's dark history. It is revealed that the mountain is home to the Wendigo, a cannibalistic creature spawned from a Native American curse. The Wendigos are connected to a tragedy involving miners who were trapped underground and resorted to cannibalism to survive.
Josh's Breakdown
It is revealed that Josh orchestrated some of the initial scares in an attempt to get revenge on his friends for the prank that led to his sisters' deaths. However, he becomes mentally unstable and eventually learns that the true danger is the Wendigo.
Survival and the Butterfly Effect
Throughout the game, players control various characters, making choices that directly affect the narrative. The game’s “butterfly effect” system means that even small decisions can have large consequences, including who lives and who dies by the end of the night. The goal is to keep as many characters alive as possible, though it is possible for all of them to die.
Climax
In the final sequence, the survivors confront the Wendigos and must escape the lodge before it is destroyed. Depending on the player's choices, the fates of the characters vary dramatically. If enough evidence is gathered, it is revealed that Hannah survived the fall a year ago but became a Wendigo after eating Beth's body to survive.
Endings
The game has multiple endings depending on the decisions made throughout. Characters who survive are rescued in the morning by a search party, and their final fates are determined by their actions throughout the night. There is also a post-credits scene where surviving characters may provide testimony about the events.
The narrative intertwines psychological horror, survival, and moral dilemmas, with the player's choices shaping the outcome of the story.
