Until Dawn | Full Game Walkthrough | No Commentary
Today we archive an absolute horror classic. Until Dawn was a mega hit back when it released in 2015 and I have fond memories of this game and associate it with the Golden Age of YouTube Let's Players. So many of my favorite YouTubers played this game back in the day and I remember those days fondly.
And today it is up to me to add this game to the archives and it was an absolute joy to play and record Supermassive's masterpiece. It plays much like a quicktime adventure game in the style of Heavy Rain or Telltale's The Walking Dead. This means that you walk around with various characters and make choices that alter the story while action setpieces are done by pressing the correct button at the correct time prompt.
Supermassive have made many games in this same style afterwards, but none have surpassed Until Dawn with how great the story is, how good the scares are and how surprisingly likeable the cast of characters is. I still cannot lay my finger on it, but Until Dawn does a great job of making you care for the characters, even though at the beginning of the game they are quite annoying. Almost everyone that I have talked to agrees that the characters make a weak impression in the first hour or so of playing the game, but by the end you are rooting for all of them to make it out. Well...maybe except Emily.
The story is also great with multiple layers as different storylines are interwoven into the plot. It has many different types of horror including traps as seen in the movie Saw, paranormal horror involving ghosts, slasher horror and also creature horror. There is even a set of characters that make it feel like you are watching an episode of Scooby Doo. Some of the jumpscares are absolutely amazing and a handful still got me this time, even though I had seen the game before.
I cannot praise this game enough. Probably the weakest part in the game are that sometimes choices don't actually matter at all and you still get the same outcome. But that is a common thing with games like this and I would argue that Until Dawn might be the best in its genre. I think that Heavy Rain was a more revolutionary game, but that game has aged a bit poorly with a lot of boring segments like brushing your teeth, setting up the table etc.
This year we will also get a remake of Until Dawn so I hope to revisit this snowy mountains again with this group of friends and see what new content and scares have been added. See you soon, everyone!
