Nvidia's RTX 50 series GPUs are launching with a mix of pricing strategies and a new version of DLSS. Here's a breakdown:
Pricing:
Good News (Mostly): The RTX 5080 ($999), 5070 Ti ($749), and 5070 ($549) are priced similarly to or slightly below their RTX 40 series counterparts.
Bad News (High-End): The RTX 5090 is priced at $1,999, a significant increase over the RTX 4090's $1,599 MSRP.
DLSS 4:
Exclusive to RTX 50 Series: The headline feature of DLSS 4, "Multi Frame Generation," is exclusive to the RTX 50 series.
More Frames Generated: DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames for every rendered frame, significantly boosting FPS. Nvidia claims this allows the RTX 5070 to perform comparably to the RTX 4090 (with DLSS 4 enabled).
Potential Drawbacks: Like previous versions of Frame Generation, image quality and potential artifacts remain a concern and performance is reliant on game support.
Hardware Specs & Comparisons:
RTX 5090: Features 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB GDDR7 memory, a 512-bit memory bus, and a 575W TDP. It's designed to be significantly more powerful than the RTX 4090 and physically smaller in its Founders Edition.
RTX 5080: A more modest upgrade with 10,752 CUDA cores, 16GB GDDR7 memory, a 256-bit bus, and a 360W TDP. It should outperform the RTX 4080 Super but likely won't reach RTX 4090 levels without DLSS.
RTX 5070 Ti & 5070: These cards are positioned as more accessible options, with specs relatively close to their RTX 40 series counterparts, but with slight improvements in CUDA cores and memory bandwidth.
Mobile RTX 50 Series: Laptop versions are also being released, with reduced specs and power consumption compared to their desktop counterparts. The mobile RTX 5090 will have 10,496 CUDA Cores and 24GB of GDDR7 memory on a 256-bit bus.
Release Timeline:
RTX 5090 and 5080: January 30th
RTX 5070 Ti and 5070: Sometime in February
Mobile RTX 50 Series: March
Key Takeaway: While the RTX 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070 offer good value, the RTX 5090 is a premium product with a significantly higher price tag, aimed at the high-end enthusiast and professional market. DLSS 4 plays a major role in Nvidia's performance claims.
