The Microsoft Store has a new update that changes how users control application updates. Previously, users could disable automatic updates and manually install them at any time. Now, that option is gone. Users can only pause updates for a set period, from one to five weeks. After the selected time, the Microsoft Store automatically resumes updates and installs all pending apps without user permission.
This new policy aligns with Microsoft's approach to Windows updates. The company wants to ensure users run the most current and secure versions of its software. Outdated apps, like an outdated operating system, can have security vulnerabilities that put a user at risk. By forcing updates, Microsoft is attempting to minimize these security risks for its users. This same philosophy was behind the recent pre-update of inbox apps in Windows 11 version 24H2.
For users who dislike this change, there is an option to download applications from outside the Microsoft Store. Additionally, the upcoming Windows 11 version 25H2 will give users more control over how stock applications, including the Microsoft Store, are managed on their system.
