Was going back through the menus in the Hyper Sentinel demo and saw a difficulty setting that I felt applied to me: Retrogamer. Giving it a run it stepped up the challenge quite a bit, with many more objects on the ship that you can collide with for damage. Not positive the scoring reflected the considerable increase in challenge but it added a lot more care to my flying around.
