Vaccine (Nintendo Switch) Review | 8-Bit Eric | 8-Bit Eric
This is a review of Vaccine for the Nintendo Switch by 8-Bit Eric. Vaccine is heavily inspired by the retro Resident Evil games, but with a roguelike concept of gameplay. Previously released on the Wii U shop, it is now on the Nintendo Switch.
The premise of this game is quite simple, but has a new approach to the old school 90’s survival horror games. You have a 30 minute time limit to venture through a randomly generated mansion in order to look for a vaccine to cure a friend of yours who’s suffering from a mysterious illness called Shredder Syndrome.
You are able to chose from a male or female character, each with slightly different attributes. This game features old school Resident Evil tank controls. You can also use the d-pad in order to move your character
What makes this game a rogue like is each round of Vaccine will put you in a completely different mansion, with randomly generated rooms, enemy placements, traps and item distribution. Another feature of the gameplay is that your stamina runs out should you run around too much and the zombies catch up
Anytime you kill an enemy you gain some experience points and these go towards leveling up your characters attributes, like health, stamina, luck, etc. In my opinion, the idea of having randomly generated mansion layouts is absolutely fun.
Certain areas in the mansions are locked and you have to find the matching key in order to open the doors. This game is meant to feel like a game from 1996 and I think that is an interesting take in the survival horror genre. The low resolution graphics in my opinion add that element of creepyness that I used to enjoy playing in early 3d era games.
Not to mention the fixed camera angles add to the challenge because there will be times you entering a room and will not know if there is something on the other side! There is also an option to have CRT Mode on that gives the game an even more nostalgic feel for those that enjoy playing with that classic game feel.
Once you finish the game, it replays the game with a new level, and less time, but you keep your experience points and attributes.
So this game is a perfect opportunity for those that love that type of challenge. I’ve read that the game actually has a "true ending" unlocked by beating it about nine times in a row. This game is targeted towards fans who have huge nostalgia for resident evil.
Part of the charm of Vaccine is the random challenge that will either be cruel and evil, or a fair challenge. This game is a nice nod to the original Resident evil game.
