Whether this is intended or bug, I can't say. Currently you can get excessive amount of copper if you start digging nearby the copper deposits.
Silver veins, which you can mine in the mountains have less underground area.
With the Wishbone from the 3rd boss, you can find Iron scraps out in the open areas of Swamp biome. They have the smallest underground area.
