R. Douglas Helvering's Variations on Kirken is given its premiere performance by organist James Roman. This 8-Movement set of variations is based on the very popular hymn Kirken (Built on the Rock), written by Norwegian composer Ludwig Lindeman in 1840. The stylistic content varies, ranging from aBach-inspired chorale fantasia to a Dupre-inspired toccata.
