Slowly but steadily, selected developer tools are being migrated to web technology using emerging technologies such as Atom, Eclipse Che, Monaco, Theia, or LSP. Those technologies are mainly dealing with textual editing (source code, DSLs), but what about non-textual modeling? Many existing tools are essentially modeling tools. They allow you to create models that can be manipulated in tree- and form-based editors as well as in graphical editors.

In this talk, we provide an overview of the available technology for building web-based modeling tools. We compare those technologies (e.g. JSON Schema, JSON Forms, D3/JointJS/mxGraph) with their long existing desktop alternatives and highlight the shortcomings and missing pieces. We especially focus on ways in which to migrate or even single-source existing desktop tooling and provide a technical demonstration along a prototypical example tool.
