VF #11 (PS2 60fps) VF4: VF1 model & other stuff my AI unlocked in a night of Kumite
I'd left my AI Lei-Fei fighting in Kumite mode overnight ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8rY3b5H6dU&feature=youtu.be ), and he ended up going from newbie 10th kyu to 4th dan in that long single session. And he was waaaaay faster, and actually kind of seemed to know what he was doing--and had still not, as I had feared might have happened, learned to do side step / evade motions from the AIs he had come up against. Whew! So now I have what looks like a pretty fierce AI Lei-Fei I can fight in VS in more or less non-evade matches. : D Let's try it out.
0:45 - VS - my player character Jeffry vs my AI Lei-Fei - Well, my AI Lei-Fei is pretty even with my own play as Jeffry--and I really don't know what I'm doing as Jeffry. Still, this was a big improvement over how good--I mean bad--my AI Lei-Fei was before he went through a night of Kumite
7:20 - A.I. System - Sparring - I think there had been some moves my AI hadn't been able to learn before, when he was 10th kyu (that's the lowest rank), and supposedly that's because there are moves that require the AI to be at a certain rank before they can learn them--so now that he's up to 4th dan, it was time to take him back into Sparring mode to see if he could pick up any moves he wasn't able to learn before
8:37 - hey, he learned a move! : D
17:03 - VS - my player character Aoi vs my AI Lei-Fei - my Aoi play isn't any better than my Jeffry play, and so we had some good matches ^_^
25:45 - Data Files - Edit File - Edit Item&Color - checking out all the gear my AI Lei-Fei picked up in his overnight Kumite session, also trying out some different clothing colors
32:57 - Data Files - Edit File - Status - noticed my AI Lei-Fei had unlocked his "VF1 Character"--this is an unlockable alternate player model that renders them in a low-poly model reminiscent of how the Virtua Fighter characters looked in the very first Virtua Fighter game.
33:18 - Data Files - Edit File - Status - AI Ability - Here's where I finally found the detailed AI data--you hit left or right from the default Status screen. AI Ability shows changes to their skills.
33:38 - Data Files - Edit File - Status - Move mastery - this AI data screen shows how good they are at (or prone to use?) specific moves. A key thing here is that moves they haven't learned yet are rendered in dark gray--you can see some of those at 33:44. So, you would come here to find which moves they don't know, then--if they're moves you want them to use--take them into Sparring to teach them those moves, if they're high enough level to learn them.
34:23 - Data Files - Edit File - Advice - I don't think I know enough about how VF really works to interpret this detailed feedback in a way I can actually put to effective use (as opposed to really mixing my AI up!)---well anyhow it seems kind of overwhelming!
35:59 - Settings - Game - checking P2 controls for some reason, then saving
37:27 - VS - my player character Aoi vs my AI Lei-Fei - checking the "Training Stage 1" stage my AI unlocked for VS in his overnight Kumite session
39:59 - VS - my player character Aoi vs my AI Lei-Fei - I selected my AI's unlocked "VF1 Character" model by holding the P and K buttons after picking him at the character select screen. This flat-shaded model actually looks fabulous in the game's lighting, way snazzier than the default VF4 models with their mushy/pixelated textures! Cool!
42:05 - Options - Settings - Game - Set the "HIT EFFECT" option to "FLASH ON"--now to see if the flash effect shows up on the VF1 Character model--if it doesn't, maybe I my photosensitive eyes can play VF4:Evo (where you can't turn the flash FX off) after all : o
42:27 - my player character Sarah vs my AI Lei-Fei (in unlocked VF1 Character model) - picked a dark stage so I could see the flash FX...and it does still show up on the VF1 Character model. Too flashy! Bp Ah well, I kinda figured.
Anyhow, now I seem to have established the way to make a non-evade AI character to play against in VF4. You do initial sparring to give them starting moves, avoiding using evade, obviously, then repeat the following loop until they're tough enough for you: a) overnight Kumite session, b) check for missing moves in Edit File - Status - Move mastery, c) teach them missing moves in sparring, d) fight 'em--and correct any attack tendencies you don't like--in more or less evade-free VS sessions.
It's a good deal of work, but in theory, in the end you could have the whole cast to fight against in evade-free matches, which I would like because I really don't like the side-stepping. : PP
But eh...maybe there's a much quicker way to play VF4-ish characters without evades? (And without the match-starting white screen flash effect VF4 does?) That low-poly Lei-Fei reminded me of something...
Next episode: I find a VF game I had totally written off when it first came out, and it just happens to be nearly everything I want now : o
