VF #14 (PS3 60fps) Virtua Fighter 2 - menus, & Jacky goes to Chicago
Playing Virtua Fighter 2 (emulating the 2.1 version of Virtua Fighter 2) on PS3. Looks sharp, runs really smoothly. No side-stepping. : ) I played a few embarrassing online matches when it first came out, years ago; now we're just messing with the offline stuff.
Specifically, just Jacky Bryant, because he's the only one who, in Arcade mode, never has to fight in his sister Sarah's Roman amphitheater stage---which I avoid because its constant lightning flashes make my eyes feel bad. 8P
Sarah is the second Arcade mode battle, but if you're playing as Jacky, instead of meeting in her amphitheater, you to to a gritty urban stage, apparently (internet says) Chicago.
The game is hard! : P The controls are very sharp and precise, and maybe unforgiving compared to other games; and movement can feel a bit unnatural, especially how you push up against the opponent--there's sort of a rubbery feel, and if a strike is blocked the blocking character sways back strangely, without it feeling like any contact is made, so fights can become a weird wobble back & forth (and if you end up being thrown or whatever to the side, the camera may end up showing the action from a really awkward, disorienting angle for a bit), hard to deal with if you're relying on Jacky's standard throw, which seems to have a probably way too generous range--but doesn't seem to work at all unless you're stepping toward the opponent; if you get too close you seem to get into this kind of swaying block vortex where you can't land a punch because they're blocking, and you can't throw because you can't move into them! Sheesh. Also I'm a noob.
0:00 - In medias res: doing a pre-recording run to get the volume level set, found myself doing really well when I wasn't paying attention--this is Normal difficulty--so figured I'd better start recording or nobody would believe I'd got to "round" (aka "stage"; oddly, game calls stages or fights "rounds," and rounds of a fight "sets" or "fights" : p) 5 ; ).
1:23 - Character select. Press Up when selecting your character to get their alternate costume; Jacky's default wife-beater is eh, so I tend to go with his alternate: black leather jacket & blue jeans.
1:33 - vs Lau in this weird stone monument yard thing. Lau is really annoying; I like to think they made him the 1st opponent to get him out of the way. : P
2:18 - The Chicago stage! Only accessible when Jacky and Sarah meet. Gawk at the VF graffiti and posters! Cringe at the ugly greys and greens! Cower at the police sirens and screams!
3.24 - Vs Shun Di, going down a river on a big raft. Pretty cool stage.
4:24 - Round 4, Pai Chan, Chinese temple courtyard maybe; the difficulty is definitely kicking in at this point; once the AI starts blocking regularly, I find my default punch and kick attacks become pretty much useless; at some point I really need to study my way through Jacky's command list
5:44 - I lose : o. Check the Pause menu, from which I access Jacky's big ol' Command List of moves
7:01 - Pause menu - Help & Options - Controls
7:09 - Pause menu - Help & Options - Settings
7:33 - Arcade mode menu - here you see the default (green) settings
7:39 - Main Menu - For 1P, there's only Arcade mode ; ). I picked Scoreboards without thinking--I had no network cable in the PS3. : P
8:07 - Offline Versus - Just wanted to look at it, got really confused trying to activate my second controller. Haven't used a PS3 in a while. : PP
9:08 - Offline Versus match vs myself =p, it is Chicago w/ the Bryants
10:08 - Arcade - Easy - Jacky (default costume). Any easier? A bit. I do get to...
14:03 - Round 5: Lion, Great Wall of China
15:28 - Round 6: Jeffry, tropical island. Funny thing, he can't block last hit of Jacky's punch spam.
19:47 - Round 7: Kage, small Japanese temple, annoying cricket chirps
21:01 - Round 8: Jacky, rocky forest
22:28 - Round 9: Wolf, mountain cage - he also can't block Jacky's punch spam
26:09 - Round 10: Akira, temple courtyard - nothing else worked so just spamming throw : P
28:44 - Bonus Stage: Dural, undersea Greek temple - can't continue against her : P
30:44 - Credits
31:19 - Name Entry - got really confused about the controls (read afterwards you just look at the bottom text to see what's selected)
32:13 - title screen & attract sequence
