VF #12 (PS2 60fps) Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary - trying characters pt 1
It's Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary on PS2! What that heck is that, you ask? Well it's the characters and move lists from Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution combined with the rules and style of the first Virtua Fighter, pretty much. : o
For me, this solves the problem I had trying to play recent-ish VF games without using side-step evades, which I don't like--because since VF1 didn't have side stepping, neither does VF10th! (Neither did VF2; side steps were introduced in VF3, which added a new, fourth button for them. : P)
And it doesn't have the hit flash FX that can't be turned off in VF4:E and VF5. : D
And it doesn't have those silly ground juggles--where it looks like you're skipping someone across the ground : P--that were introduced in VF4.
It *does* have the sky-high slow moon jumps of VF1 and 2, which aren't my favorite things. So weird! Maybe they were meant to let you get out of the corner? But whenever I try one I generally just get bopped, so I dunno.
Also, some punk at Sega added a horrible flickering effect to the life bar when someone takes damage--that was *not* in the original Virtua Fighter, which is where the rest of the life bar design here comes from...so ugh. Fortunately, when I'm playing I don't seem to be able to look up and have it stab me in the photosensitive eyeballs.
In 10th, single-player-wise, you just play through one of two two fixed gauntlets ("Routes") of opponents: "VF1," where you face only characters from that game, or "Evolution," where you start against VF1 characters, and work your way to VF2 (Shun Di, Lion), VF3 (Aoi--still no Taka Arashi), VF4 (Lei-Fei, Vanessa), and VF4:E (Brad, Goh) characters.
I haven't played VF since maybe the ancient arcade days, so I don't remember if it was as hard as the extremely hard VF2...but at any rate, this 10th Anniversary remix isn't that hard, fortunately; on the easiest skill level, I can already beat the game without a single continue, with a bit of luck, and that's about how it should be, I say! : P
The action and the low-poly, flat-shaded (with some cheats using sneaky textures here and there) are super smooth. It doesn't have bells and whistles, but this is a heck of a game! Especially considering it was a free extra, in North America, on the Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution PS2 game disc, which was itself a budget release (you boot VF4:E, then go to Options - Special or something like that, and you'll be asked if you want to launch Virtua Fighter 10th Anniversary--that's the version I'm playing in this video; 10th was a separate, limited release in Japan, and a pre-order bonus disc or something in Europe).
10th does not save any data to the PS2 memory card, so you have to re-do your options settings--volume level, controller buttons, etc, route, difficulty level, etc--each time, a slightly inconvenience. Also, this is the only video game I've owned, as far as I can think of now, in which the volume levels are really problematic: the music--which I think is VF1 tracks, or VF1-inspired tracks--has a few tunes where the base beats actually make my ears start to hurt, even though they don't *sound* all that loud. It's weird. And if you look at a readout of the audio from the game, it's one big nearly maxed-out fuzzy worm. So, the audio levels could use a bit of adjusting. Fortunately, you can set music and SFX levels separately in the (non-saved) game options, which saves my ears at least (I hadn't done that for this video; starting in the next one, I run with a mere 4 pips of SE VOLUME, and 2 of BGM VOLUME), but the volume levels are still wonky.
