VF #33 (PS3) running Virtua Fighter 5 in unsupported 1080p
(My video's sound gets way out of sync after switching resolutions here, unforunately!)
The internet tells me that when Virtua Fighter 5 launched on the PS3 on Feb. 8, 2007, it listed 1080p support on the back of the box--but the highest supported resolution listed on the North American version, when I got my hands on it after its Feb. 20 launch, was 720p.
I've also seen on the internet people say the 1080p was bad upscaling, or that there were rumors of slight performance problems or graphic glitches in the Japanese version when running at 1080p. Now that I'm Googling for those glitch rumors again, I can't find them, so eh. Anyway, I can't pretend to be able to discern 1080p that is just 720p upscaling definitively by eyeball, so whatever.
Actually, VF5 running at 1080p on PS3, at least in the default "Sharp" filtering option, looks pretty nice to me on my 1080p monitor! I'd still be running it at that resolution, only my computer can't actually capture 1080p60 (just 1080p30 : P), so I'd have to shrink it down for the recording and that would blur the video a little. : P
But how can I run it at 1080p anyway, you ask, when the North American release doesn't support 1080p? Because, in a little quirk, with this game--yes, the North American version--if you set your PS3 to run in 1080p but NOT 720p, instead of running the game in 480p or whatever, the game will run in 1080p!
0:00 - Just a bit of the game running in 720p for comparison purposes (as Lau, with the Soft display setting option)
0:54 - On the PS3 XMB, switching the console's Video Output Settings from 480p & 720p to 480p and 1080p
1:15 - Now we run the game again and this time it's in 1080p!
2:15 - Options - Screen settings - I have Display Settings set to the "Soft" filter, which does end up rendering the characters a little fuzzy or mushy looking, even at 1080p--it does a better job of anti-aliasing fences and things in the background, though.
2:22 - some Arcade mode with Lau, 1080p, Soft display setting
8:35 - Switching to Sharp display setting
8:50 - some Arcade mode with Lau, 1080p, Sharp display setting
14:17 - back on the PS3 XMB, switching back to 720p
14:38 - running the game in 720p
15:48 - some Arcade mode, Lau, 720p, Sharp display setting
20:13 - display setting back to Soft
20:29 - game options - turning off the annoying Commentary (another thing I should have done was turn on auto-save under save options so I wouldn't keep hitting all those save prompts : P)
20:44 - some Arcade mode, Lau, 720p, Soft display setting (commentary off : P)
Recorded 1/18/20 w/ PS3, OSSC, Framemeister, Elgato HD60
(This video was recorded at just 30 fps because my laptop can't capture full 1080p at 60fps : P)
