Imagine you’re in a hedge maze at the rear of a Princess’ palace, because Princess types often own entire hedge mazes. Now imagine, in the middle of that hedge maze there was a strange tree stump, with toadstools growing out of one side of it. Your natural instinct might be to place yourself atop the stump, maybe stood at an increased height to celebrate your victory and superiority over the maze, maybe perched in seat upon it to rest your aching legs and have a spot of lunch…

Now imagine, when you step off the stump, and make your way back out of the maze, you are no longer in the Princess’ garden, but a strange, twinkling forest, with mushrooms big enough to bounce off, fireflies lazily but purposefully drifting from stump to stump, various trees linked together by fairy lights, and then you see it… a clearing in the trees, full of unicorns.

They’re unpredictable, unicorns. Maybe they’ll let you come and stroke their mane. Maybe they’ll even trust you enough to ride them. Or, maybe they’ll kick you in the head or bite the sleeves of your jacket. Who can say? But really, seeing a unicorn is a special enough occasion, so maybe you shouldn’t test your luck beyond that in the first place?
