Developed by Bytemare and published by CP Verlag in 1991

At first glance, Vincent appears to be a a quirky collect 'em up very much in the vein of Great Giana Sisters, albeit one starring a small vampire with a penchant for blood oranges.

The game has one of the longest introductory scrollers I've seen (which you need to read, since it contains the instructions), not to mention a few rough edges. There's the occasional graphical glitch here and there, and the controls could certainly do with some fine tuning.

Having said that, I wouldn't call the game amateurish. I've played plenty of boxed retail games far less polished than this, and the level design - including the various items you can collect to overcome certain obstacles - are well thought out and add some variety to the levels. I should note that I deliberately lost a life during the first couple of levels in order to collect more cash; items only appear in the shop if you're carrying the requisite amount, and dying doesn't reset your money total, so you can simply pick up more coins on your next life.

For example, purchasing a set of fire boots from one of the in-game shops enables Vincent to walk across pits of fire without incurring any damage, while collecting a credit card power-up protects his wallet from the cash-sapping credit sharks found scattered around most of the levels.

The game indicates there are secret levels to find, although I wasn't able to find any additional levels as such, just bonus sections of existing levels usually off-limits unless you've equipped the correct equipment.

All things considered, Vincent is a challenging platformer with some tricks up its sleeve to keep players interested, plus there are some decent SID tunes later in the game. It's not exactly a classic, but Vincent can be entertaining, given half a chance.
