Violent Storm [Arcade] - 2-ALL Clear - Boris
15My first ever single player 1 Credit Clear (1CC) of both loops of Violent Storm, a 1993 beat em up by Konami. Played on the Japanese (JAC) version of the game with default settings on MAME 0.266 (NOTE: the Japanese version gives you extra lives at 500k, 1.5 million, 2.5 million etc points whereas the other versions don't give you any extra lives at all). Played on 2025-05-19.
It's a great game! It keeps up the pace by giving all the enemies low health, and it keeps things dangerous by zooming in the camera and making the arena small.
The bosses are pretty odd; they're all 1v1 fights, they're mostly terrifying to deal with in neutral, but almost all of them are vulnerable to infinite combo/loop setups if your execution is up to the task. I prefer beat em up bosses where you're fighting a group of enemies and have to rely on your crowd control skills, but the ones in this game are still an interesting challenge.
The second loop (the "violent round") mixes up the stages in playful ways such as letting you run all the way through the stage 2 train while being chased by Spike enemies (30:23), giving you only 35 seconds to run through the first part of stage 3 (31:43), raining oil drums down on your head in stage 4 (35:34) and putting a pile of fish at the start of stage 6 (42:30).
I was going to record commentary for this run but I tried playing the game on Hardest difficulty and fell in love! I'll record some commentary for the Hardest 2-ALL if I manage to get it.
