I'd planned to put together a special talkie video to coincide with my YouTube channel reaching 10,000 subs. Unfortunately, real life got in the way and I just wasn't able to find the time. Fortunately though, it seems that another piece of previously unemulated Sega history has just fairly recently become playable, so this seems like a pretty good way to mark the occasion... (at the time I'm typing this I'm currently sat at 9, 995 subs)

So here’s a nice surprise, the Sega Chihiro arcade version of Virtua Cop 3 is now playable in Cxbxr Emulator. Up until fairly recently the only way to play this game (apart from in an actual arcade) was to own a specially modified original Xbox with extra RAM (as that’s basically what the Sega Chihiro arcade hardware was). It's a real shame this never got ported to the original Xbox, as the likes of Outrun 2 and House of the Dead 3 showed that the system could cope pretty well with Chihiro ports despite the lack of the extra RAM.

Considering how notoriously difficult Xbox emulation seems to be this is really impressive stuff. It’s not perfect; the sound’s a bit wonky (and you might want to turn it down by the end of the video) and the targeting reticule’s not really displaying properly. The frame rate’s a bit variable (I wanted to try and capture this with the more lightweight Obs not FRAPS, but Obs was being a dick, as per usual, and wouldn’t display any picture in the capture window). The game starts out around 30fps and then at about halfway into the video seems to suddenly speed back up to 60 with a few periodic drops. I'm using an Xbox 360 pad to play this, I don't think you can control the cursor with a mouse yet.

Despite being a big fan of the Virtua Cop series back in the day, I never actually got to play this one in the arcade (or even saw it, for that matter). I wasn't sure here what I was supposed to do in the ES mode bits, but a quick check on the interwebs afterwards cleared it up for me: "Virtua Cop 3 introduces a new slow-motion "bullet time" mechanism called "ES mode" which allows players to slow down time by stepping on a special pedal. While in ES mode, time slows down as the player's ES meter is depleted. The meter can be replenished by shooting more enemies". I think the pedal might be allocated to the shoulder button. I also hadn't realised there was a a way to swap weapons.

Anyhoo, this isn't a full playthrough, just the first level up until I reach a boss type character. This was really just to show it working.

My PC:
Intel core i5-2310 @2.90GHz - 8 GB
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 - 2 GB
Windows 7 Home Premium
