15Square Enix has once again stirred controversy, pushing their woke agenda with the recent Pride-themed promotion of Little Goody Two Shoes. Despite the game’s lackluster performance, Square Enix decided to heavily promote it under the LGBTQ+ banner while simultaneously disabling comments on social media. This move reeks of pandering to woke culture rather than focusing on quality game development, echoing the disaster of Forspoken and the company’s declining profits.
In the wake of this, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii revealed the pressures Japanese developers face from western regulations to conform to woke narratives, including gender ideology. For example, in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, players are no longer given the option to choose between a male and female character—now, it’s simply labeled "Type A" and "Type B". This change reflects Square Enix’s growing commitment to DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives, which seems to have taken priority over creating unforgettable experiences for gamers.
Rather than listening to their audience, Square Enix is doubling down on promoting woke culture across its brands, from their internal DEI department to their infamous Suicide Squad and Kingdom Hearts controversies. Their blatant disregard for fan feedback, combined with tactics like turning off comment replies, only fuels skepticism and erodes trust in their brand. This corporate shift toward prioritizing political messaging over game development risks alienating their long-standing fanbase while chasing short-term social approval.
Square Enix’s continued embrace of woke ideology—whether through promoting Pride or censoring their own content—makes it clear they’re more focused on pushing divisive agendas than delivering memorable gaming experiences. Fans are increasingly frustrated, and the company’s decisions could have lasting consequences on the future of its beloved franchises.
