Compression in audio is a means of balancing the highs and lows of your recording. It prevents the loud stuff from getting so loud it distorts, allowing you to boost the gain of the quiet stuff.
The settings I use are... not typical, so if you're more familiar with audio editing than I am, feel free to school me on why this is a bad method. But for now, it seems to be working out okay.
