Voicemails regarding Firearms in Canada with NDP MP Peter Julian
Emailed my Member of Parliament regarding some if the nonsense that the Liberal Party of Canada has proposed regarding firearms this upcoming election.
I got a call back while I was in class, didn't notice; he left a couple voicemails. I called him back, and we talked a bit. Additional information that isn't in the voicemails here: He is aware and understands that bans of already-illegal firearms such as Assault Rifles make zero sense. (I didn't bring up the ridiculous conflation of AR-15s with Assault Rifles(They are not the same thing.), or specifically Handguns or Semi-Automatics in general. In hindsight, I probably should have, even though some were mentioned in my email, but I had other things on my mind at the time. I might call him back again.)
I'm aware that regardless of his opinion, more than likely if he's ever given the opportunity to vote on these issues, likely it'll be a whipped vote that doesn't matter. Still, one can hope.
If you're unfamiliar with this riding, it's basically an NDP stronghold that isn't likely to flip. So best case scenario firearms-wise is denying the seat to the Liberal government. At least it makes me feel better about voting for the man, since NDP values tend to be far more in line with myself than the Conservative Party of Canada's...
While it's not legally required to obtain the other party's permission before recording a call, I have asked and obtained his permission to record this and distribute it. That's what the 3rd voicemail is about; he helpfully left another to be more of a clip for publication. I'm including all three however.

Dear Minister,
In the wake of the Liberals' announcement of their intent to ban types of firearms that are not rigorously defined and fairly arbitrary, as well as needlessly complicate Canada's firearms laws by giving municipalities a difficult-to-enforce jurisdiction over handguns, I would like to convey my lack of support for measures such as these.
Bans and ill-conceived notions driven by agendas do nothing to reduce or address crime in Canada, while instead proposing to confiscate my legally owned and used property and deny my ability to enjoy hobbies I've gotten interested in over the past few years. The proposed intentions the Liberals have shared are detrimental to Canadians, both myself directly, and those of several million other licensed individuals.
While I'm aware the NDP have in past been lukewarm at best in their recognition of this, I would like to have some affirmation from you that the NDP and you personally are not interested in supporting firearm-related policies that have demonstrated factual errors behind them, harm Canadians rather than help them, and fail to address the root causes of issues that actually matter to Canadians.
Criminals self-evidently do not care if a gun is banned.
Sport shooters and hunters do. Businesses that supply them(Several in your riding.) do.
Students in schools interested in these hobbies do.
Families do: my grandfather owned a rifle he used to hunt with. My uncle owns it now. His son will likely own it when he grows up. If he doesn't get interested in firearms when he's older, I'll take it. Most of my family has enjoyed some level of sport shooting over the decades, though many choose not to own their own firearms.
Banning firearms without specific and factual reasoning is just turning a blind eye to crime and scapegoating a hobbyist minority who harm no one.
Regards,
