Assetto Corsa | World Sim Series Hourly MX5 Cup

So, my first sortie into the world of competitive simracing!
I don’t think I’m at all unique in being the child who wanted to be a racing driver. But I was the teenager, and young adult, and adult, and now staring down mid-life crisis, still wanting to be a racing driver! My career was driving (buses), my main passion was driving, and it is only due to a past partner asking me not to, that I didn’t actively chase that dream in my mid-twenties. Since I developed ME in 2010 however, any real life ambitions to perform in motorsport are now impossible. Double edged sword of course, is that as I can’t work, I am kept alive by greater society, and I can at least in some small part, chase that lifelong dream.

With this being essentially a “Let’s Play” and/or entertainment channel, I’m not entirely sure that this blog style report of my endeavors will be well received, but at 50 subscribers I’m not expecting anyone to complain en-masse! I do plan on still doing some let’s play series as well, along with the promised deep dives in Master of Orion, which I’m still struggling through rather slowly right now, but in the aspects of what can provide a return for the time investment, this is what I want to concentrate on. I hope you enjoy!

Assetto Corsa has the familiar descriptor of “Alien”, which describes someone who is able to push beyond the apparent limitations of physical race driving to achieve cornering and lap speeds normal people would consider entirely impossible. They of course get accused of cheating all the time, because try as they might, normal people just can’t do it. These aliens are the people who I need to compete with in order to succeed. That is going to be a challenge, of course, but it’s a challenge I fully believe I can rise to. As I learn more of how to adopt my driving approach to emulate and ultimately beat the aliens, I will be releasing driving tutorial videos of how and why the change in approach worked. Of course if I don’t or can’t, I won’t!

The service I’m using is World Sim Series (link below) which is free to join, and for premium members offers prize winning championships. The hourly series itself offers no financial rewards, but it is a proving ground on which I can cut my teeth and discover just how close, or far behind, I am to the fastest drivers. I’m targeting top 20, with consistent podiums. It is very likely that I’ll pay for the premium subscription in the future, and or donate to the service, but in the beginning I will remain a free user.

However, due to the outlay required to join the premium subscription, I will probably do something I never really wanted to do, and open a Patreon for support. I didn’t want to pursue this because I didn’t feel that it would be fair for someone to pay a monthly pittance to someone who promised some kind of faithful reward, but was never healthy enough to actually commit full time to doing so. And so, I won’t be opening that account until I’m ready to join the premium subscription members and compete for prizes. At that same time it’s possible that I’ll find popularity amongst other drivers, and their fans, which will lead also no doubt to me streaming the prize rewarding competitive races, either on YouTube or twitch, with a dedicated discord to boot. Eventually I would also even be looking to find sponsorship arrangements, with a custom livery to fit as well! But as yet, none of that is happening. One step at a time.

So, thank you for your support, if you offer it, both in funding or moral encouragement.

For those who will inevitably ask, my graphics card is Vega56 (overclocked and undervolted), CPU R5 3600, VR is Oculus CV1 (Consumer Version 1).
My wheel is the Thrustmaster T150, chosen for its 1080 degrees of lock. I don’t have a gear stick, or clutch, just 2 pedals with flappy paddle gear changers. The lack of clutch (and H box) is by far my most limiting factor, but one I expect to be able to over come.
