"Masami Kurumada fans: behold the inspiration for Saint Seiya!"
" Once upon a time, there was a man who created a huge, extraordinary success worldwide called Saint Seiya. His name was Masami Kurumada. Even though Saint Seiya was not as exulted in USA as it was in the rest of the world, it is safe to say that in South America, Asia and Europe Saint Seiya was THE myth when it comes to Japanese animation. What most people do not know is that before Saint Seiya, Kurumada already had had a taste of success and admiration with a manga series called Ring ni Kakero. And surprisingly, what is also unknown by many people is that Ring ni Kakero actually influenced Saint Seiya in various aspects, from the character design to the Greek Mythology theme. Ring ni Kakero, for the Super Famicom, is the only game based on the homonym manga and anime series ever released. And even if you know nothing about the series, it is easy to like Ring ni Kakero if you give it a try.

It is easy to identify Kurumada's style here. The main character, Takane Ryouko, looks a lot like Seiya (from Saint Seiya) in the anime series.

The gameplay is very familiar if you are used to cinematic fighting games, such as Yu Yu Hakusho Tokubetsuhen (also released for the Super Famicom). You have three different meters. The yellow meter on the top is your energy meter. The second meter, the light blue one under your energy meter, is your stamina meter. If you execute too much special moves in a short period of time you will lose stamina quickly and will have to take a breath and open guard. You must hit weak punches on your opponent in order to safely perform an special move or defend one. Special moves are performed with the A, B, X and Y buttons. In order to make them more effective you will have to fill the third meter, the light blue one under your character's picture, with the Select button. Choosing which special move you should use to attack or defend is the key point. Even though the names of the special moves are in japanese, it is not hard to figure out when you are going to perform a hook or a jab, once arrows pointing left, right, up and down are shown beside the names of the special moves. You are free to move yourself over the ring, and this limited sense of freedom makes the game more enjoyable than Yu Yu Hakusho Tokubetsuhen, for example. The game features a Story Mode, which seems accurate to the manga series, and a complete Multi-Player Mode.
For those wondering where the game influenced Saint Seiya here comes the explanation. Ring ni Kakero is a boxing game, and the opening Tournament reminds me of Saint Seiya's Galactic Tournament. Takane Ryouko almost looks like Seiya in boxing glovers. Kawai Bushi, one of your mates, holds a rose between his lips, the same way the Pisces Gold Saint, Aphrodite, did. In a point of the game, Ryouko and his mates are challenged by 12 Gods from the Olympus. This was the first mention to Greek Mythology in a work by Kurumada. Recently, Kurumada himself admitted that the 12 Gods from the Olympus influenced the creation of Saint Seiya. And finally, both series are focused on fighting and heroism.
In the end, it is safe to say that Ring ni Kakero is an enjoyable experience. The manga series was incredibly popular in Japan, and the game is nothing but essential to the fans, both of Ring no Kakero itself and Saint Seiya. It is not the best game in the world, but it is an excellent material for collectors. Even if you have never heard about Ring no Kakero you should give this game a try. "
