Ⓦ Fallout 4 New Survival Walkthrough ▪ Part 1, Getting Started
[NOTE] This run was started back when the Survival mode overhaul was still in beta, which is why my starting carry weight here is 110 instead of 85. If you're using this strategy now, I highly recommend adding Pocketed mods to your gear ASAP.
If only Codsworth were programmed to say this name...
Just for easy reference, my starting build for this run is thus:
STR 1
PER 7
END 1
CHR 5 (6 after "You're SPECIAL!" mag)
INT 6
AGI 7
LUC 1
Basically, this is a stealth sniper with a generous helping of VATS and empire-building.
This is not a "straight-to-the-story-missions" type of strategy. Since the hardest part of the game is arguably the early game, the point of this strategy is basically to just skip the early game with a good amount of setup and go straight into a very strong mid-game with good unique equipment, a good supply of food, a decent network of outposts to rest/hydrate/feed at, and a strong foundation from which to add new settlements into the network/expand existing ones.
Anyways, some general survival tips:
- I assume many of you already know this, but it bears repeating since it's quite important: the player has gained the miraculous power to transmute old used bottles into perfect cans of Purified Water (at faucets/water pumps) or cartons of Dirty Water (at rivers/lakes/ponds/etc.). The former can be used to safely quench one's thirst, while the latter can be used for various cooking recipes.
- While you need a bed to save, you don't actually need to sleep; just input the time and then immediately cancel before it actually spends an hour, which will still trigger the auto-save.
- If you don't want to deal with rads and/or potential infection from irradiated food, make an early run over to Sunshine Tidings co-op. One of the cabins contains a Wasteland Survival magazine, and this particular issue increases the amount of meat you get from kills. Don't cook all of your meat right away if you're planning on setting up supply lines, though; store the raw stuff in a workbench so you can access it from any linked cooking station.
Another great option is Noodle Cups, which satisfy both hunger AND thirst and are much easier to make now that Dirty Water is more readily available.
- Put companions in power armor when you can; it increases their carry weight significantly. Even just an empty frame is fine.
