Ⓦ Xenosaga Ep. 1 Walkthrough - Part 12 ▪ Song of Nephilim, Athra 26 Series and Rianon Se [PCSX2/1080p]
The Athra 26 Series is pathetically easy with a team of AGWS as long as you have Engine Shields equipped, so I won't go into that too much.
Using characters on foot can be a bit more problematic, since it can actually put out enough damage to inconvenience you, and each elemental attack you hit it with will prompt it to counter with Morph Defense to nullify that element for the rest of the battle. You'll want to stick with piercing, slash, and hit attacks and/or make sure each elemental attack does a crapload of damage.
Rianon Se can only be hit by ranged attacks, has higher EDEF than VIT, and is weak to fire. The only attack that is ranged and deals physical fire elemental damage would be the grenade launchers equippable by AGWS. For best results, use Jr.'s Chain ether so every shot is guaranteed to land unguarded (keep in mind that she always counter-boosts when an ether is cast on her, however), and don't use W-ACT (the fire element doesn't seem to apply to the grenade launchers properly when using W-ACT, resulting in lower damage overall than if you just fire one at a time).
Now, considering Rianon Se has an HP drain attack that deals %-based damage, it might seem like a bad idea to use AGWS. From my experience, however, she seems to focus most of her hate on the first character that attacks her, and will typically use the drain move on that character (if she uses it at all).
Therefore, I have Jr. give the first blow, and keep him on foot (this is also handy since he can re-apply Chain if Rianon Se uses Gigapure). Even if she does use it on an AGWS, two grenade rounds will more than make up the HP she recovers, and it should take a while before she does it again.
If you must insist on avoiding using AGWS, giving Jr. the Double Buster+Commander's Crest and using a Stim DX on him will also give you some pretty good results. In addition, MOMO's Star Cannon is also a ranged physical attack.
Anyways, Rianon's rare drop (Shield Armor) is decent, but you mainly want the common one (Boost Pack); it's worth reloading to get if she happens to not drop it.
