The longest part of the game is learning all the insults to beat the sword master, once you learn all of them you only have to get 5 replies right before you get 5 replies wrong.
I think it took me a few days to complete this game back in the 1990's, as the Internet was still quite new, and very few people had access to it still. Walkthroughs were still sparce so you eitehr kept playing until you figured it out, or you just gave up.
Even with a walkthrough, The Secret of Monkey Island will take more than an hour to beat, and there are a few easter eggs throughout the series if you spend a little extra time playing through the game.
