For our next assignment, we’re moving against a major base in the center of Human territory. Our scouts have reported that this is the training center for their soldiers, so destroying it would deal a heavy blow to the Human war effort. This enemy base has all the standard Human structures we’ve encountered to this point, and as a training center it boasts two Barracks rather than just one. Our side, on the other hand, doesn’t have a base. There are no Peons or structures and no chance of getting them, so we’ll have to make do with our starting forces. That would normally be a severe disadvantage, but in this case it’s honestly not that difficult. For some reason the game decided to give us a break at this level and we start with an absolutely overwhelming force—our roster includes ten Grunts, ten Spearmen, five Raiders, four Catapults, four Necrolytes and four Warlocks. That’s more than enough to destroy one base. We do have to be careful of the enemy defenses—Catapults and the Conjurer spell Rain of Fire can cause mass casualties, which we can’t afford—but as long as we’re tactically sound the enemy doesn’t stand a chance.

As we begin, I move our Spearmen into the multi-line position that I’ve used throughout the playthrough and have them advance forward, while bringing in a Raider and some Catapults for support. We’ve got a decent defensive position established, and the next step is to lure the enemy forces into our death trap; to this end, I have one of our Warlocks summon some Spiders and have them move into enemy territory. Sure enough, they take the bait and one of their units pursues us, only to get mowed down by our Spearmen. I repeat the process a couple of times by having our Raider lure the enemy in, but things get hairy when a Catapult starts to approach. One Catapult could easily wipe out our Spearmen wall, so I have them beat a hasty retreat while I rush in some Raiders to take out the Catapult in melee range.

Soon the coast is clear and I decide it’s time to attack. I move the Spearmen up across the bridge and they clear out the few enemy forces between us and the base, then I have the Raiders and Catapults join them for a major assault. Things don’t go as well as I’d like—a few enemy melee units manage to knock out our Catapults—but our strike force is so large there’s little they can do to force us back. Just to leave nothing to chance, I bring in a force of Grunts to reinforce the attack. Before long the base is wiped out and we win an easy victory.
