Now that we have the rod, we can return to Jowan and Lily to start the main quest anytime we want. However, there’s an optional side quest here that I want to do first. I head back into the hallway and open a closed door to find an elf mage working at a table. This is Senior Enchanter Leorah, one of the top level mages in the Circle and the head of the laboratory. She’s an alternative option for signing the rod of fire form if we hadn’t wanted to get Irving involved; we obviously don’t need her to sign it, but she can still give us a quest. I ask her in dialogue what’s going on in the stockroom caverns next to the laboratory, as the doors are closed. She’s initially quite defensive and tries to change the subject, but after we press the issue a bit she finally admits there’s a problem. Giant spiders have somehow infested the stockroom, and Leorah thinks it might have been a magical mishap on her part. She’s too embarrassed to admit what happened, and so far hasn’t had time to clear out the pests, so we agree to do the job ourselves. She gratefully gives us a key and we head into the stockroom.

The map to the stockroom area is set up as a giant corridor that advances past some desks and supplies (which can be looted for items) and then splits into a fork in the road. We can go right or left; it doesn’t matter which, since the path goes in a circle and we’ll come out the other end. I go right and slowly but surely clear it out. The giant spiders we encounter can be tough, but our lightning spells are quite good at weakening them quickly and we only face one or two at a time, so they’re manageable. We do have something of a close call when two spiders attack at once near the end of our run through, but I do manage to kill one before the other can really join in and then eliminate the second one after using a Heal spell. That’s the exception, however; most of our encounters are quickly resolved in our favor. Eventually, we kill all the spiders present and I report back to Leorah. She’s quite happy and gives us a collection of potions that we can use later—they’ll be very helpful.

With that done, it’s finally time to return to Jowan and Lily. I return to the Chantry, pick up a Codex entry that I missed earlier, and let them know that I have the rod of fire. The two of them then become party members just as Mouse did in the Fade, and I spend some time equipping them. They’re both unarmed and unready for combat, but I have plenty of extra items that I can give them. I give each of them one of the spare amulets we started the game with, and hand Jowan an Acolyte Staff I picked up earlier. Lily’s a rogue class character, so I give her a dagger and small shield. Once I’m satisfied, I take them to the first floor and then to the basement. We can now start the effort to get Jowan’s phylactery.
