Vermintide takes place in and around Ubersreik, a city overrun by Skaven. You will assume the role of one of five heroes, each featuring different play-styles, abilities, gear and personality. Working cooperatively, you must use their individual attributes to survive an apocalyptic invasion from the hordes of relentless rat-men, known as the Skaven. Battles will take place across a range of environments stretching from the top of the Magnus Tower to the bowels of the Under Empire.
Vermintide is a first-person multiplayer game that combines the fantasy adventure of the Warhammer universe with wave based combat in a mission based system. Yet somehow, all of these convoluted systems come together to make a great multiplayer experience. The plot and environments are more window dressing than anything, with the swarmming enemies and cooperation with your team taking front stage. However, with the emphasis on teamwork, playing alone with AI characters is an incredibly difficult experience. With no way to strategize and no understanding of the maps it becomes a free-for-all bash everything experience that usually ends in defeat on anything over the normal difficulty.
That said, this was my first experience playing with other people and it was FANTASTIC in comparison to playing with the bots. If I didn't know any better, I may have thought that the AI play was so difficult to force the player into using the online functionality. As we mention in the video, joining random rooms online can be... trying. As far as I can tell there isn't any easy to access chat system, which both makes sense and is disappointing. In a game where playing online with other people is so important, it is difficult to coordinate without an in-game chat system. At the same time, with a game this focused on action there is next to no time to type messages in a chat when trying to respond to enemies that suddenly appear from the walls. Because of this I strongly recommend playing with friends and setting up a voice chat such as Skype or teamspeak.
