▼More about Mirror’s Edge!▼

In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners transport sensitive data away from prying eyes. In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed, your sister has been framed and now you are being hunted. You are a Runner called Faith and this innovative first-person action-adventure is your story.

Mirror's Edge™ delivers you straight into the shoes of this unique heroine as she traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast paced chases. With a never before seen sense of movement and perspective, you will be drawn into Faith's world. A world that is visceral, immediate, and very dangerous.

Live or die? Soar or plummet? One thing is certain, in this city you will learn how to run. From the makers of the groundbreaking Battlefield franchise, Mirror's Edge is an action-adventure experience unlike any other.

This game looks like it could be a lot of fun! But also incredibly frustrating! Mirror’s Edge has always looked incredibly interesting to me. Aesthetically, gameplay, plot - all of it seemed like something that I would really enjoy. As I mention in the first few episodes, I tried playing this game a couple of years ago (current: 2016). My computer was simply not able to play the game at full speed, which *incredibly* hinders this kind of gameplay. Any game that consistently drops below 24 fps (even below 30fps is rough) is unplayable, and in a game that is all about maintaining your momentum and moving forward, that kind of start and stop visual is not only nauseating but breaks your ability to play the game. *However*, I am viewing that as a problem with my computer, not an intrinsic problem with the game. That said, I am still having a rough go with Mirror’s Edge, even with a shiny new computer.

Even in the tutorial segment of the game, every aspect of the game wants you to follow the exact correct route to the letter. It is incredibly jarring, because it really feels like it goes against the Flow of Mirror’s Edge, which is all about using your environment to continually move forward losing as little momentum as possible. When you approach an area and aren’t in the exact mindset of the developer, you tend to go slightly off the dedicated path and can’t move forward as smoothly, assuming you are not completely stopped. I will concede that some of this may be my re-adjustment period when moving from 2D platforming to 3D platforming. It is always incredibly difficult to make that jump because important information is lost in a 3D world. You have a cone of vision in 3D games, whereas with 2D platformers like (most) Mario games or Shovel Knight you can see everything that will affect you at all times without the need to work a camera. The top things that causes me the most trouble in Mirror’s Edge are aiming the camera and (possibly a subset of that) not being able to see my feet when I approach a ledge. In Mario or Shovel Knight the jumps can be really tight because you can see exactly when your character’s feet are at the edge of the platform and time your jumps accordingly. It simply isn’t possible to see both your feet approaching the ledge and the location you plan to jump to in First Person 3D games. But 3rd Person 3D games have problems of their own, for another discussion.

That said, this game is beautiful. Part of me is glad that I was forced to wait for my new computer to play this because it is stunning, especially for a game from 2009. Part of that is because of the bright, saturated world that you are running around in. Everything is incredibly clean, the sky is clear, and corporations plaster billboards on everything. Eh, you can’t win them all I guess. At least they are tasteful billboards in most cases. The saturation and using contrasting colors (blue/green/yellow and red) help make them pop, and gives you more direction in where you are supposed to go. Keeping the palette simple also helps, there may be gradients of how bright a color is, but typically the game sticks to it’s 5 or so primary colors to create direction and mood.

The plot is relatively simple: corporations have forced a group of freedom fighters underground, and they operate within and around the system to help free people from oppression, usually by spreading information.

In this episode, I tackle the tutorial section and meet Celeste. I learn how to run on walls, tuck and roll, and zipline with my bare hands! Also I accidentally shot Celeste. I still swear I missed though.
