The extra setup was to prove how true this softlock really is. The Defender Z's Blast Punch deals half damage so it can never kill, and it doesn't count as a physical or a magical attack, so Tidus can't retaliate with Caladbolg. It deals a strong delay so two of them firing consecutively means that Tidus can never have a turn even while Hasted, and the Poison and Doom statuses only activate/progress on the inflicted's turn, so Tidus can't even die from passive effects. Quite literally your only hope is to reset the console.
