Warriors Orochi 4 - The Swordsman and the Assassin (Hard) | Part 10
Here we've gained access to our first Side Story. This stage has us assist Musashi and Kojiro against Dong Zhuo's forces. I get that Musashi is the swordsman, but does Assassin really fit Kojiro? Unless it's a reference to Fate/Stay Night Kojiro, I don't recall him doing anything assassin-like. Hell, Fate Kojiro didn't really do anything assassin-like and that was his class in that series.
Anyways, I said we were here to help them but they actually start as an aggressive third party force. Once we beat them both down and prove we have mad skillz they will join our side. To my surprise, Lu Xun and Zhu Ran don't trigger a fire attack in this stage. In fact they don't really do any sort of strategy. We just advance on Dong Zhuo's forces and beat off the swarm of generics he has. That...leaves me with very little to talk about, now doesn't it? We literally just attack the enemies and move up. The most that happens is Diaochan appears as reinforcements and B-lines to Lu Xun, so you'll have to deal with her pretty quickly. That's about it really.
Welp, let's talk about another mechanic I overlooked. Remember when I mentioned Unity Magic being a 7-man attack? That's because you set up a party of 7 in the camp. 3 are in your active party, the ones you actually play as. The remaining 4 only appear for Unity Attacks but they offer passive buffs based on typing and depending on the character themselves. Each character has stats that go into certain aspects, so you can build up your stats however you wish. Also, after performing a Unity Magic, buffs are applied depending on if you have a type in your party or not. For example, Power types give an attack buff, Tech types give temporary unlimited musou, and Speed types give a speed buff. If you don't care to think about that kind of stuff, just have the support characters of each type and aim for a 14% overall stat boosts. Not a major effect, but it's nice. And the free musou attacks WITH a damage boost can really come in handy in a clutch situation. Plus I really like the 7-man pose before using a Unity Magic. Can't wait to do that with my favorite 7 and screen shot it.
I played as Yukimura, Kanetsugu, and Ma Chao here. I used Yukimura before, and he's even better now that he has access to his full C5-string. The impalement at the end of that combo is very satisfying. Kangetsugu is a Special type SW character, so he's a bit lacking in the moveset department by comparison. However, his C4/C5 are still really good and his C5 even applies a defense buff along with breaking guards and just being fun to see him flail his cards around. Ma Chao is one of my favorite DW characters to play as, so I enjoy his moveset and it's pretty damn effective just like it was in DW8. His C6-EX is especially nice when it sucks in enemies toward him, giving you plenty of options to cancel into a new combo before the final hit sends them flying. He also tends to hit like a truck in most games he's in, and here is no exception.
