Followers are basically the game's version of xp. They provide shared processing power via the DedSec app, which can be used to upgrade Marcus's hacking capabilities. It's up to Marcus to use his elite hacker skills to impress the masses and get DedSec as many followers as he can, though here he gets 2000 just for buying pants, so definitely off to a good start.
